Peter Amato, MD, is an anesthesiologist specializing in providing acute pain management and regional anesthesia to patients needing surgery at University Hospital and UVA Outpatient Surgery Center. He is especially interested in novel peripheral nerve blocking techniques and medications and understanding nerve anatomy and injury.
As an assistant professor at UVA Medical School and course director for the fourth-year medical student clerkship in anesthesiology, Amato is actively involved in training students and residents in this field. Collaborating with other anesthesiology educators under a medical school education grant, he is currently working on adding high-fidelity cardiac life support simulation to the fourth-year student anesthesiology curriculum.
Born in Paris, France, Amato spent most of his childhood in Farmington, Connecticut. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in biology and worked in research and biotechnology before pursuing a career in medicine and the human connection he missed in previous roles. He earned his medical degree from the University of Connecticut and completed an anesthesia residency and regional anesthesia fellowship at UVA. Amato began his training at UVA in 2009 and has been on faculty since 2013.
Amato and his wife have two daughters. They enjoy traveling, cooking, skiing and hiking together as a family, and have volunteered in the past with PACEM (People and Congregations Engaged in Ministry), providing free community meals. Amato also enjoys cycling, swimming, playing guitar and songwriting.
